EXPLORING SPANISH

III. COURSE INTRODUCTION:
Hello and welcome!. Your are about to explore a world where hundreds of millions of people communicate in Spanish every day. For example, did you know that over 20 million people in the United States speak Spanish on a daily basis? Did you also know that Spanish is an official language of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico? In addition, Spanish is the official language of 18 Latin American countries, the African nation of Equatorial Guinea, and, of course, Spain. Because you probably will find yourself having to speak Spanish at one point or another in your lifetime, you are going to learn some common words and expressions in Exploring Spanish that are used often by native Spanish speakers. Then you will be able to understand some of the things they say, and they will be able to understand you.
If you practice correct pronunciation with your teacher or with the audio cassettes, you will learn to speak Spanish even better. Besides being able to understand and speak basic Spanish, you will find out some information about countries where Spanish is spoken and get some insight into their rich traditions in art, music, and literature.
Hopefully, throughout your journey you will discover that learning Spanish is fun and not too difficult. Be sure to practice your Spanish at every opportunity both in and outside of class. As with any other skill, the more you practice, the better you will become.
As the world continues to shrink and as countries and people grow closer and closer together, it is important to be able to communicate with each other. So, let's get started!
Vamos!
